Gavilan College Water Industry Training program to host open house

WHO: The Gavilan College division of Career Technical Education and Gavilan College Community Education

WHAT: are hosting an Open House to celebrate the opening of the new Water Industry Training Classrooms at Gavilan College. This event is free and open to the public. It will be an opportunity to see the facilities, learn about the credit and not-for-credit training opportunities for careers in the water industry, meet some of the instructors, and enjoy light refreshments.

WHEN: Open House - 4 p.m., Tuesday, January 17, 2012; this will be followed by a free 3-hour information session for potential students at 6 p.m.

WHERE: Portable Buildings number 7 and 8, Gavilan College Gilroy campus; 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd.

WHY: Within the next 5-10 years, over 50% of the current water industry workforce is set to retire.

The Gavilan College Water Industry Training program can help students prepare to fill that gap. For two years, Gavilan College Community Education has been offering courses on a not-for-credit basis. Starting in Spring 2012, some courses will also be offered for college credit. The first two credit courses to be offered will be WTRM 101 - Introduction to Wastewater Technology, and WTRM 102, Beginning Water - Wastewater-Distribution Math.

GAVILAN COLLEGE, CA - On Monday, November 21, the Gavilan College Rams football team turned their attention away from football, and worked together to help the less fortunate in the community. As volunteers for St. Joseph's Family Center they spent a few hours loading the ingredients for Thanksgiving Dinner into the cars of those receiving food assistance from St. Joseph's.

Gavilan College Dean of Kinesiology and Athletics Ron Hannon said: "with so much that has happened recently, it's inspiring that the football team was able to give some time and attention to helping others."

Gavilan College faculty awarded fellowships in Human Rights Education

Sociology instructor Lindsay Padilla and history instructor Enrique Luna have been awarded Human Rights Education Fellowships for 2011-12 by the Division of International Comparative and Area Studies (ICA) at Stanford University and the Stanford Program on International and Cross-Cultural Education (SPICE).

After attending a conference in June entitled "Teaching Human Rights in a Global Context," designed by and for community college educators, Lindsay and Enrique submitted an application for a fellowship to assist in designing curriculum, developing resources, and coordinating workshops. "The idea from the very beginning was to allow the community college educators to design and implement a program that's best suited to their needs," said Jonas Edman, Curriculum Writer, SPICE, and one of the conference coordinators. "Through these Human Rights Education Fellowships, the program will definitely benefit from the educators' own expertise and enthusiasm."

"This fellowship encourages me to collaborate with faculty across California and the country, improve my teaching, and reach my students on a very human level," said Padilla. " I see this opportunity as one directly in line with my research and educational goals."

According to Enrique Luna, the fellowship "will allow me to continue to build a humanizing pedagogy that actively promotes connections between teacher and students, between student and the community, and among students themselves....at its core human rights is best understood as acceptance of oneself, and others, in an inclusive community."

Conference coordinator Rob Wessling is the Associate Director of the Center for Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies at Stanford University. He said that "the Stanford Human Rights Initiative aims to promote human rights education in California and nationally, and to serve as a model of how faculty can effectively create resources for one another," adding that "we are very pleased that Lindsay, Enrique and so many other community college teachers were interested in this effort."

Instead of sporting a golden tan at the end of the summer, Gavilan College Computer Graphics &amp; Design instructor Colette Marie McLaughlin and 154 other educators are glowing with strategies they developed over the past eight weeks. Their insights were discovered while completing projects through the summer science research program Industry Initiatives for Science and Math Education’s (IISME.) IISME seeks to transform teaching and learning through industry-education partnerships. Industry sponsors make it possible for educators to participate, and part of each fellowship is dedicated to planning innovative ways to make courses more relevant to students.

A rather large turtle was found, inexplicably, next to the fence by Portable Building 6. The staff of Portable Building 2 went into action: rescuing the turtle and returning it to the pond. Along the way, they learned something about the turtle's (wet) defense mechanism.

Lindsay Padilla - Just back from the 55th Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) at the United Nations

Lindsay Padilla teaches sociology at Gavilan College and is earning her doctoral degree in International and Multicultural Education with an emphasis on human rights education at the University of San Francisco. In February, she attended several sessions as part of the Commission on the Status of Women at the United Nations in New York. Employee of the Month John Lawton-Haehl

Since joining Gavilan College, Dr. Lawton-Haehl (pictured above with Board of Trustees President Laura Perry) has brought the Gavilan Theatre Arts Program to new heights by serving our students and producing spectacular shows throughout the year. John has been diligently developing the Theatre Program by raising visibility in and building bridges with our surrounding communities. He is also dedicated to improving our college through participation in shared governance.

For example, John has been working with the ABC outreach program (Arts Back in the Classroom) and brought over 500 elementary school students from South Valley to our campus. For the fall 2010 children’s theatre production, Peter and the Wolf, over 3,500 students came to Gavilan, 500 of whom participated in campus tours. He has also been working with Christopher High’s Dr. Kate Booth in order to continue building bridges with Christopher High.

On campus, John is in his second year as VP of the Academic Senate. He also joined the Learning Council to provide an important bridge between the senate and the council as we develop new strategies for helping our students succeed. We are proud to recognize Dr. John Lawton-Haehl for giving so much of his talent and skill to Gavilan College

Gavilan College announces new head football coach: Spencer Gilford to lead the Rams after serving as Defensive Coordinator at Los Medanos College

Spencer Gilford, most recently Defensive Coordinator at Los Medanos College, has been hired as the new Head Football Coach at Gavilan College. Over a period of two years, Gilford helped the Mustangs improve their rank 20 positions in the state, and according to the Los Medanos website, " reduced opponents yards per game by 55.8 yards, reduced opponents points per game by 15.8 points and doubled the sacks to 24." Before Los Medanos, Gilford served as Outside Linebacker Coach at the College of San Mateo, and as defensive assistant and recruiting assistant at Stanford University. He has had prior stints at Los Medanos as the Linebacker Coach and Kick Gamer Coordinator, and at St. Mary's College, Diablo Valley College and Fremont High School.In addition to his coaching background, Gilford has relevant experience as an educator. He earned his Bachelor's Degree in Political Science at CalPoly, then earned a teaching credential and Masters Degree in Education at Chapman University. He has been teaching math and science to at-risk high school students for over a decade. He has taught Football Theory, Skills, and Conditioning classes at Los Medanos College.

Communications faculty present insights on Service Learning

Faculty from the Communication Studies discipline will be representing Gavilan College at the Western Speech Communication Association Conference held in Monterey over President's Weekend. Shelley Giacalone, Denise Besson Silvia, and Ellen Waddell (L to R, pictured above) will be delivering a presentation entitled: Learning in Action: Service Learning in the Small Group Communication Course. In November, Besson Silvia and Giacalone attended the National Communication Association Conference and began preparing for the Western States conference showcasing the Service Learning work that has been a part of the Gavilan College Communication Studies program for over 10 years.

Douglas Martin - Gavilan College's Employee of the Month for December, 2010!

Doug Martin has been at Gavilan for just under two years, and already stands out as an exemplary employee and colleague. As a Programmer/Analyst in the MIS Department, he has been supporting the efforts of the Title V grant, and has worked closely with different departments to develop a “user friendly” program (Gavilan Integrative Data System or "GIDS") that allows administrators and deans to pull critical data regarding students and instruction. This data will help staff throughout the entire college to determine how best to meet the needs of students.

Doug has a kind and gentle spirit which shines through in all his interactions with colleagues and has the rare ability to explain complex, technical concepts in a clear and straightforward way. He is always eager to take on new projects, and when he discovers areas needing improvement he makes the adjustments without being asked.

Doug has completed many projects, including one that moved student records information (transcripts, applications and other documents) from an old system to Banner, thus enabling counselors and others who work directly with students to have immediate access to a more complete set of records, which in turn promotes a higher level of customer service for the students!

Doug works very well with users to determine their needs and incorporate them into the required reports and programs. He is a delight to work with and is an excellent member of the MIS department. His positive can-do attitude and his technical and people skills are a tremendous asset for Gavilan.

Teresa Ilasin - Gavilan College's Employee of the Month for November, 2010!

Teresa is a Human Resources Technician and has served the district with distinction since July 10, 2006. In September of 2010 Teresa was asked to step up to the plate and take on the workload of two positions until longtime HR Technician Pilar Conaway’s replacement could be hired. For two and one-half months, in addition to handling the normal workload of two HR Technicians, Teresa had the extra tasks of health insurance open enrollment, the recruitment for the vacant HR Technician position, and the work involved with a project to fully implement an HRIS database. Teresa did this work without complaint and without missing a single deadline.

True leadership is what Teresa is all about! She is dedicated to serving the staff (and public) at Gavilan College and models the way with vision, patience, poise and knowledge. She is an excellent colleague to all who contact her or seek her assistance in HR. She is careful with details and is respectful, friendly, confidential and professional to all. The entire Gavilan College community benefits from her care, collaborative skills and teamwork.

Gavilan Service Learning students make a difference at Chamberlains

"I will try to express how much it means to Chamberlain's Mental Health Services to have Ruth, Kim, Chris, David, and Keith give up their weekend and more, but words cannot do their service justice. Our Day Treatment room has needed an overhaul for many years. In one (very long) weekend, this group came in and did what we have not been able to get to. They painted the walls and all the trim in a huge room, making Day Treatment look bright and happy and professional for the children we serve. They changed out light fixtures, moved furniture, took off doors, patched, taped, draped, painted, cleaned up, and put everything back again, while laughing, talking, and enjoying what they were doing. This is a huge accomplishment. Thank you so much for having this service project as part of your class."

Nate Pruitt fell in love when he was 9, and hasn't fallen out since.

From the moment he heard the beautiful voice crooning a soulful jazz tune, the notes drifting across the street on a sultry summer night from the open door of a nightclub in New Haven, Conn., Pruitt knew he had found his calling.

Herman “AL” Tyler, a student in the Gavilan College Computer Graphics and Design program, wins Best in Show at State Fair Golden Bear Trophy

Gilroy resident and Gavilan Computer Graphics and Design (CGD) Student Herman “Al” Tyler will be honored with the Best in Show Trophy for the Industrial Technology Education competition at the California State Fair on July 17. Thje competition was was open to all California Community College Students. Tyler’s thoughtfully rendered images of a boat he designed earned this Gavilan CGD Student a Golden Bear Trophy for his Mechanical Drafting Show entry. In addition to Al Tyler’s Best in Show Trophy, his project and animated images qualified him to receive a $100 gift certificate and two first place rosettes.
Herman "Al" Tyler is a returning student who enrolled in CGD this past spring to learn SolidWorks, a parametric 3-D mechanical Computer Aided Design (CAD) program used by engineers and designers. In the class he developed an invention he named the "Dual-width Boat." Tyler’s 3D graphics illustrated his beautiful detailing while his animated images demonstrated how his boat’s sides collapse to a width of eight feet for easy transport and increased speed or can expand to twelve feet for better stability and more comfort.

"In these economically challenging times it is especially appreciated for the State Fair to showcase the diverse ways that Industrial Technology students such as Al Tyler, can develop marketable skills in relevant and rigorous Career Technology Education courses” noted Colette Marie McLaughlin, Gavilan College CGD Instructor. Award winner Al Tyler, echoed the importance of this competition, ““The CGD program at Gavilan provided the tools and training to develop presentation drawings and videos of my Dual-width boat design. Obviously I would like to see the concept developed into hardware, and the Industrial Technology Education Competition has provided the exposure to show the concept to any interested parties.”

SCOTTS VALLEY — While many are heading to Yosemite or the beach for their summer break, Steve Smith of Scotts Valley is taking a decidedly different — and more hair-raising — vacation.

On Sunday, the former Scotts Valley police officer heads to Kyrgyzstan to monitor elections amid ethnic clashes that have killed hundreds and forced more than 75,000 to flee the Central Asian country in the past week.

Smith, 46, a married father of three who teaches administrative justice at Gavilan Community College, departs on Father's Day for a 10-day elections observer assignment with the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe — a regional security group with 56 participating countries.

Please join us in congratulating Saul Salinas - Gavilan College's Employee of the Month for May, 2010!

Saul is a Senior Computer Hardware/Software Technician in the MIS Department and has eight years of service with the college. Saul’s work in MIS is performed “behind the scenes.” Although he has very little face-to-face interaction with other employees, everyone on campus benefits from Saul’s work. Saul is responsible for:

Maintaining the faculty/staff email system;
Maintaining the SPAM and Virus protection servers;
Maintaining the wireless network; and
Maintaining the firewall and network connectivity for all three sites

Besides fulfilling these responsibilities and maintaining our network infrastructure, Saul successfully completed two large MIS projects – the research and installation of our wireless network and the creation of our free, on-line Maintenance Ticket System for use in submitting and tracking maintenance requests via email. Both of these projects were enormous undertakings, but Saul researched, desinged and implemented both solutions in one year while continuing to perform his regular duties.

Rick is a Facilities Maintenance Worker II in the Facilities Department and has nearly two years of service with the college. He is a self-starter who sees many things that need to be fixed entirely on his own and corrects them before a work order is even submitted! Rick brings many skills to the Maintenance Department, particularly mechanical and lock-smithing skills. He is very customer service oriented and has received numerous kudos from staff and others regarding his excellent service. Rick is a pleasure to work with - prompt, courteous and resourceful. Rick is unfailingly cheerful, even when barraged by requests from several people at the same time.

Rick does great work and makes sure his customers are updated on the status of the project he is working on if he is called away on an emergency. He is most definitely an asset to the college and goes above and beyond on a daily basis.

Diana is a Computer Hardware/Software Technician in the MIS Department. She is extremely dependable, possesses excellent technical skills and provides quality customer service to the entire campus. In addition to her personal contributions, Diana acts as a mentor to several of her fellow computer technicians. Organization is a strong point that serves her well in scheduling upgrades for student lab computers at both on and off-campus sites. Aside from her regular duties, Diana fills a valuable leadership role as President of the local California School Employees Association (CSEA) chapter. She is a past-recipient of the CSEA Employee of the Year award. Always a pleasure to be around, she takes pride in her work and consistently exhibits a cheerful attitude. Diana is a deserving recipient of the April 2010 Employee of the Month award.

Water Aerobics -- staff invited!

Jane Maringer will be teaching a Water Aerobics Class in the warm shallow pool every Thursday from 4:15-5:05 p.m. starting on April 1st. It is free to Gavilan employees and it is drop in. You do not need to know how to swim. We will continue until the end of the semester. A few people tried it out last
year, and it was a success. Join us for some fun, music & low impact
exercise (great for those of us with arthritis). Wear a bathing suit,
sunscreen, hat, towel, and aqua shoes (not mandatory). If we get enough
interest, Jane can teach on Tuesdays at 4:15 too.

Carol McEwan-Suarez honored with CSEA Golden Bear Award

As Past President of the Gavilan College CSEA chapter, Carol McEwan-Suarez (right) has made a significant impact in encouraging open communications. She attends the majority of the district's board meetings, and encourages other CSEA members to attend as well. She attends Regional President’s Meetings (RPM’s) and Board of Trustee (BOT) meetings of sister chapters. She helped re-establish the EERC (Employee Employer Relations Committee) meetings with the district so that issues that are not negotiable can be resolved through a collaborative, problem solving approach. She also helped establish a Catastrophic Leave Bank and encouraged fundraising for member family scholarships. Carol was chosen by CSEA to be the Northern California Community College Representative for Research and Negotiations and represented the Gavilan College chapter at CSEA’s Annual Conference twice as a delegate. Her effective communication skills helped CSEA pass a dues increase and increase Victory Club membership. Carol understands that ‘knowledge is key’ when it comes to representing CSEA and the members-at-large with the district. Carol, along with two job stewards, will be ‘jacketed’ this April. Her E-Board has completed all required trainings. She has also become a voice for shared governance and was instrumental in encouraging Community College roundtables with CSEA on the topic.

At the district level Carol represents professional support staff on President’s Council. She has also served on various hiring committees and continues to encourage others to get involved. In unity, she has also reached out to the GCFA faculty union. In addition to everything Carol does on behalf of CSEA and its members, she is an extraordinary Payroll Officer. She has the ability to juggle changing priorities while still meeting inflexible deadlines. She continually works to increase her knowledge and understanding of the Education Code, California retirement systems and the internal payroll process. She ensures payroll is completed on time and as accurately as possible. Her contributions help to keep the Business Office running smoothly.

Irma Banuelos - Employee of the Month

At the March 9 meeting of the Gavilan College Board of Trustees, Irma Banuelos was recognized as February Employee of the Month.

Irma was hired almost 3 years ago to work as Program Specialist at the Morgan Hill site. After many administrative conversations, Irma split her hours in Morgan Hill with Admissions and Records and Financial Aid. Now in her third year, Irma is flexible and willing to assist the Hollister site, A & R, Financial Aid Office and her home base of Morgan Hill. To state that she is flexible, would be an understatement. Her week is divided between 4 offices and she does an excellent job in each one. She's always willing to lend a helping hand and very open to taking on extra challenges. She wears many hats throughout the week and does it with a smile.

Women's Volleyball Coach Kevin Kramer was recognized as 2009 Coast Conference Coach of the Year. In 2009 the Gavilan College Women's Volleyball Team had its best season in the history of the program, becoming the 2009 Coast Conference Champions and advancing to the CCCAA State Regionals, both for the first time in Gavilan College history.

Employee of the Month -- Jeff Gopp!

The Board of Trustees Recognized Director of Facilities Service Jeff Gopp as January Employee of the Month.

Jeff was recognized for his work with the renovation of the Student Center Cafeteria, coordinating a campus recycling program, and successfully initiating a new computer generated maintenance work order system to provide better customer service and tracking. Jeff has initiated regular safety, training, and general standing meetings with the Maintenance, Grounds, and Custodial staff. As part of this effort, he completed a custodial work manual and conducted a separate training program for lead personnel in his department.

In his off time, Jeff is the “Voice of the Rams” for Rams Football home games and as a stand-in for Rams Basketball games. At one Rams Football game, when the CD system failed, Jeff sang the National Anthem to get the game started. In addition, Jeff is in training as a blackjack dealer and serves as Assistant Pit Boss for the Rams Casino Night.

He is always good natured and takes on all the tasks with a "can do" attitude. He is not afraid to get out there and work alongside his team, and recently has been seen in his "yellow slicker" working with his team to help us through the stormy weather. He goes above and beyond and his efforts are truly appreciated.

Angelica was nominated for being

the "go to" person for everyone in the A&R office in part because she has over 30 years of experience right here at Gavilan. Whenever there is a question, she has the answer! She has risen to the challenges that Banner has presented to A&R and has spent countless hours troubleshooting, correcting errors and identifying glitches before they adversely affect our students. She truly has become a campus Banner guru in Student modules. She has excellent working relationships with other departments and frequently goes out of her way to help her colleagues, both in her office and elsewhere on campus. She has a giant work ethic and with the limited resources available in Admissions & Records she has a giant workload but never, ever complains even when she must feel overwhelmed. She has a strong commitment to promoting and protecting the rules and regulations sent down from the State that Gavilan College must legally follow, but does so with sensitivity and kindness to others. Every single day she goes above and beyond and for that the entire Gavilan Community, and the students we serve, are grateful.

Rams' Wade Jacobson chooses Washington State

"He's a lot wanted," Gavilan coach John Lango told the Hollster Free Lance of Jacobson, who held offers from Arizona and others. Lango further noted other schools decided to not make an effort on recruiting Jacobson because "they felt they had no chance."

A Signing Ceremony was held in the Gavilan College gymnasium this morning, attended by Wade's family and friends.

Student Health Nurse Alice Dufresne-Reyes has provided keen leadership during the last few months in responding to the H1N1 Virus and prevention efforts on our campus. Alice quickly agreed to chair the H1N1 Task Force and has worked tirelessly to post preventive posters, answer questions from faculty and staff, obtain doses of vaccine, and plan and administer our first H1N1 clinic.

She was honored as November Employee of the Month at the December 9 meeting of the Gavilan College Board of Trustees.

Instructor David Kier publishes third novel

Adjunct history and political science instructor David Kier has just announced the publication of his third novel. The Door to the Shadows (listed on Amazon.com) is an epic fantasy and a sequel to Ravenscroft, which was published last year. Both books are part of the Landsaga trilogy; the third book in the trilogy should be published late next year. Kier's first fantasy novel, Jody, was published in 2007.

Don't leave your valuables unattended!

Please be advised that there have been several thefts on campus recently, generally when valuable items are left unattended and in view. For example, two cars were broken into in lot H during a softball game this weekend. Both vehicles had valuables left inside in plain sight (an iPod Touch and a camera with lenses). Windows were broken to gain entry & the Sheriff's Department took reports.
In addition, a student's laptop computer was stolen when the student left it unattended. (The Sheriff's Department took the report.) Be sure to take valuable items with you or lock them out of sight. If you do see anything suspicious please alert Campus Security by calling "10" from any campus phone.

The WorkAbility 3 Program and Disability Resource Center at Gavilan College will be honored as the Outstanding Community Agency of the year by the California Department of Rehabilitation, San Jose District at their breakfast on December 9, 2009.

The Department of Rehabilitation had this to say:"The WorkAbility 3 Program, and all the programs and services in the DRC @ Gavilan are exceptional, but it is truly in the 'service delivery' that they are able to make the connections meaningful to consumers and community. The success of the program(s) is evidenced in the numbers, yes. Californians give high grades to their public higher education systems, but they are worried about college costs and the impact of state budget cuts. These are the findings of a statewide survey released today by the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) with funding from The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. CSEA Quilt Fundraiser

Once again CSEA is pleased to have a beautiful quilt crafted by our own Laurel Blakley as a fundraising opportunity for the holidays. Proceeds from this year's fundraiser will benefit local charities in Gilroy, Hollister and Morgan Hill - the communities served by Gavilan College.

Articulation Day a Resounding Success!

Articulation Day, an effort to strengthen partnerships and expand articulation efforts with local high schools, was held at Gavilan College on Saturday, October 24. This event was hosted by the Gavilan Career Technical Education division in partnership with the Regional Occupational Program.

Dr. Kinsella began the day with a warm welcome to everyone followed by a video developed by the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges explaining the importance of articulation ultimately leading to the success of our students. The rest of the day was dedicated to the faculty from both Gavilan and the high schools working together to develop articulation agreements. Over 41 participants including administrators from local high schools attended the day's activities which resulted in 10 new articulation agreements and 15 renewed articulation agreements with 7 local high schools in the areas of Art, CSIS, Business, Computer Graphics and Design, Accounting, Journalism, and Child Development.

Thanks to the following faculty for their participation in creating a successful day:
Jason Adkins, Bob Beede, Randy Brown, Vera Fainshtein, James Frazier, Jan Janes, Colette McLaughlin, Kevin Powers, Vic Robinson, Rosa Sharboneau, Ellen Venable

Gavilan College Women's Volleyball

Please come join us this Friday at 6:30 in Gavilan's gym as the Women's Volleyball team takes on Cabrillo College. This could serve as the biggest home game of the year as Cabrillo has been the defending conference champion the past two years. Our athletes and coaches would love a huge turn out to create a "home court advantage."

The Gavilan College Women's Volleyball Team began the Coast Conference season last night, sweeping Chabot College 25-17, 25-18, 25-15. To date, the team has a 9-5 overall record and is ranked 15th in Northern California. Bri Romero, a sophomore on the team is currently ranked 11th in the state in digs and has a very good chance to be one of the top 10 defensive players in the entire state. In addition, a number of other players are ranked in the top 100 players in other statistical categories. Instructor Shelley Giacalone to model in education benefit show

Communications Instructor Shelley Giacalone will be a model in the upcoming Jones New York In the Classroom event at Macy's Valley Fair. The show is a benefit for Jones New York In The Classroom, a non-profit organization supporting teachers and children’s education.

This non-traditional fashion show features educators as models. Giacalone's mother, a 4th-grade teacher at San Jose's Booksin elementary School, will also be participating.

Providing high-quality educational services to best meet the community's needs requires that the college efficiently use available assets. Among those is the property located on the Gilroy campus that is currently leased to a private company for use as a golf course.
